'word-of-the-year'

Last year, I came across Christine Kane's concept of choosing a 'word-of-the-year,' rather than making new year's resolutions. I loved the idea. My word accompanied me throughout 2009 and weaved itself through my life like a golden thread. Now, at the close of the year, I am thoroughly enjoying looking back and seeing in just how many ways my word has had meaning for me and how I've lived by it. My word for 2009 was authenticity.

I have a number of friends who have been doing the 'word-of-the-year,' as well, and it's been great checking in with each other about the meaning our words have held for us and what's transpired over the last 12 months. It's been exciting to hear about my friends' word choices for the year ahead, and I am already looking forward to the conversations we'll have at the end of 2010 when we look back on the year that's now to come!

Check out Christine Kane's blog for tips and ideas on how to choose your word for 2010!

Wishing you a smooth transition from this year to the next! May 2010 be your best year yet, and may you manifest your dreams, desires, visions, and aspirations!

reach out and connect with someone

While I was out on my run the other day, letting thoughts and feelings course through me, as they usually do while I exercise, a memory floated into my consciousness. A memory of an experience I'd had three years prior, close to this time of year. Just remembering this experience brought warmth to my heart, and I wanted to share it here with you. I wrote about it on my personal blog at the time, and I'd like to share an excerpt of that blog post with you.

It was December of 2006. I was in upstate NY, visiting my in-laws for Christmas. A couple of days after Christmas, I took the train to Manhattan to go meet up with a few friends, and I spent a beautiful day in the city. The warmth and feeling of connection with my friends that day still feeds me now.

...

On the train ride home, I found a seat to myself. At the first stop, a rather veloptuous lady got on the train and sat down next to me. My initial thought was to feel bummed that my space was being crowded. In fact, I almost felt a bit claustrophobic. I decided to shift my thought pattern, and, instead of feeling resistance and separation, chose to feel a connection to the person next to me. What really inspired me to do so and gave me that little extra push was a line I read in my book (Awaken The Giant Within, by Anthony Robbins) at that very moment. I'd just been reading a paragraph on loneliness. The last line of the paragraph read:

Take immediate action to reach out and connect with someone.

I sat there for a few minutes, slouched into my seat, and a bit resistant to break the invisible barrier between us. Usually, the way I strike up a conversation with a stranger is by seeking out eye contact first and then addressing them. Since this lady was sitting right next to me, there was no opportunity for our eyes to casually meet, as I would have had to turn and look straight at her. She was reading a book. I gathered my nerve, sat up straight in my seat and said to the lady: 'Is that a good book you're reading?' That started a 1 1/2-hour conversation that lasted the entire train ride home! She turned out to be quite a fascinating lady who had travelled to Ghana, contracted Malaria, lost a daughter... I talked a bit, but mostly listened to her. She told me much about her life, her family, her travels... It was neat. I was so glad I'd broken out of my comfort zone and opened myself up to making a connection. If we just are willing to open our hearts a little more, we can see that we are not seperate from the world. Instead of making assumptions about the people sitting next to us on a train, standing behind us in line at the check-out counter, or waiting next to us in the doctor's office, if we just reach out and give them the chance to open themselves up to us, we will discover a great deal of compassion for them and the world as a whole - and, thereby, compassion for ourselves, as well!

...

Remembering this interaction during my run the other day brought me great joy. It got me to thinking how amazing one little gesture can be and just what a difference it can make in our lives and the lives of others. Three years later, I am still filled with warmth at the thought of this experience! I have no idea how much it touched the lady who I talked to on the train, but, chances are, the joy of this simple but beautiful connection continued to seep into the cracks of her life well after the fact, as it did for me.

I hope this story serves as an inspiration for you to reach out and connect with others. Be it in line at the post office, at the grocery store, on the bus or a plane... Take immediate action to reach out and connect with someone. And remember to pay attention to the little signs that show up in your life - like a line you're reading in your book at a crucial moment ;), or a song playing on the radio, or a billboard ad that says something of meaning to you.

May your holiday season be filled with lots of heart-warming connections and joy!

Living gluten-free this holiday season

More and more people nowadays are living on gluten-free diets - whether that be because they have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease (an autoimmune disorder in which the lining of the small intestine becomes inflamed and damaged over time with exposure to gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale); a test ordered by their healthcare provider has revealed a gluten sensitivity; or they just found that they feel better when they stay away from gluten.

Many of my patients find that, when they cut gluten out of their diets and, instead, base their diets on gluten-free cereals, such as quinoa, millet, amaranth, teff, and buckwheat (which is unrelated to wheat, despite what its name suggests), they experience less bloating and bowel irregularities, less fatigue and allergy symptoms, greater levels of energy and mental clarity, as well as a stronger immunity.

Those people who are new to a gluten-free diet often find themselves at a loss for what to eat and how to create tasty meals without the omnipresent gluten. Holidays and social events can be a challenging time when dishes full of gluten abound and family and friends are not always understanding of your particular needs. I have found that the simplest way to navigate social situations with food is to offer to contribute a dish - that way you will know that there will be at least one item you can safely eat. If gluten is a major symptom-trigger for you, then stick to your own dish. It isn't worth the risk of getting 'glutenized' if you are going to feel sick for three days after that. If gluten causes you minor discomfort that you prefer to avoid on a regular basis in order to feel your best, but you really love the holiday goodies, then you might decide it's worth the trade-off to have a few nibbles, but be sure that the bulk of what you're eating doesn't contain gluten (or any other foods you know your body reacts adversely to).

This Thanksgiving, I improvised in creating my own gluten-free stuffing. I received very positive feedback and was quite pleased with the outcome myself, so I thought I'd share my recipe with you. It's very quick and simple, and it tasted surprisingly similar to traditional stuffing. (The secret lies in the flavor imparted by the celery, onions, and thyme, which are an integral part of any stuffing recipe. ;))

delicious gluten-free stuffing recipe:

(feeds about 6 people)

ingredients (use preferrably organic whenever possible):

1 cup quinoa (uncooked)

1 medium acorn squash

extra virgin olive oil

1 medium onion

1 bunch celery stalks

a few twigs of fresh thyme (or a few pinches of dried thyme if fresh is not available)

sea salt

pepper

1/2 cup dried cranberries

raw pecans

Start with cooking the quinoa by following the instructions on the package.

**Note: there are a couple of different ways to cook quinoa - you can either cook it like rice and measure out the proper amount of water, or you can boil it like pasta and strain it in a fine-mesh sieve, which is how I like to do it. I find that 17 minutes in boiling water is the perfect amount of time for just the right texture to my personal liking. I usually cook up a big batch (2 cups of dry quinoa) to last me for the better portion of the week and keep it in my fridge. That way, I have it handy to use in various dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as needed. If you want to save yourself some time the day you are preparing this dish, you might want to pre-boil your quinoa the day before.

Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Wash the acorn squash and cut it in half. Scrape out the seeds with a spoon. Drizzle a little bit of extra virgin olive oil on the flesh-side of both pieces, then place them face-down on a cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes, until tender to the fork. The underside will become nicely browned and caramelized. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, thoroughly wash the celery stalks to remove any dirt and chop the celery and onion. At medium heat, add enough olive oil to your pan to lightly coat the bottom. Once the olive oil has heated up, add in the celery and onion. Sautee for about 10 minutes, stirring regularly and adding in thyme, sea salt and pepper to taste.

Next add in the cranberries and stir, then the cooked quinoa. After stirring the mixture thoroughly, remove from stove.

Once the acorn squash has cooled down enough, peel off the outer dark-green skin and cut the flesh into cubes by cutting first length-wise and then cross-wise on a cutting board. Gently fold the squash into the quinoa mixture, as the flesh will be rather soft.

Transfer the stuffing to an 8 in. X 8 in. pyrex baking dish. At this point, if you are not ready to eat, you can refrigerate the stuffing and heat it in the oven later. Or place it right in the oven for just a few minutes to make sure the entire mixture is warm.

Just before serving, sprinkle with raw pecans. If you want, you may honey-glaze the pecans beforehand. Simply melt a couple of teaspoons of honey in a pan and add the raw pecans, stirring continually at low to medium heat, taking care not to burn the nuts. As soon as they begin to brown, transfer them to a plate to cool. The pecans will become crunchy as they cool off and dry. You might have to break them apart like brittle, then sprinkle on top of your dish.

**Tip: I also love serving these on salads with pomegranate seeds and goat cheese - another holiday favorite!

ENJOY!! :) ... and feel free to give me feedback on how the dish came out for you!

be open to receiving guidance

Each of us has within us a divine spark. Our bodies are permeated and nourished by spiritual energy and guidance. Having faith and trust in this reality is an important part of creating health. Each of us has a guardian angel, but to benefit maximally, we have to ask for guidance and be open to receiving it.

blessings in disguise

Most of my major disappointments have turned out to be blessings in disguise. So whenever anything bad does happen to me, I kind of sit back and feel, well, if I give this enough time, it'll turn out that this was good, so I shouldn't worry about it too much.

fall

The first whiff of fall is in the air in these parts of California. As quickly as the last heat wave has faded out, the cool has moved in. I relished being able to wear a sweater today, and I enjoyed the nip in the air as I stepped into the cool of the night on my way home. Tonight is the first night in a very long time that I am closing my windows to go to sleep.

There is something special about this time of year… a nostalgia. It is a time of letting go. Of beginning to go inward… preparing for winter.

We have to accept that the long, light, and fun-filled days of summer are coming to and end and begin to transition into shorter, cooler days. The darkness sneaks up on us, and we discover with surprise just how early the sun suddenly sets. We turn around to find the moon has already risen.

Tonight, the moon is hiding behind the clouds. She likes to tease. Emerging briefly at times to wink at us, just to disappear again a few short moments later.

Fall is a time filled with memories. Both happy and sad. In Chinese Medicine, this season is associated with the Metal element, and the emotion corresponding to it is sadness, or grief. For many people, fall brings with it a sense of aching or longing. It may be specific, as in aching for an out-of-reach or deceased loved one, or more vague, as in feeling a tug or a wanting... a feeling of ‘pulling’ or contraction in the chest. A knowing that there’s something more that's just a little out of reach.

This is the time to go within and find what out what it is that we are longing for. Take time to meditate, go out for a walk, and marvel at the beauty of nature, leaves gently falling from the trees and dancing their way to the ground.

Spend some time on your own these next few weeks, and listen to your inner voice. What is it saying? Take time to connect with yourself and tune into what your heart is telling you. Notice any feelings that come up… and then just be with them. Do not judge them or think you ‘should not’ be feeling this thing or another. Allow yourself to mourn any people or circumstances from your past. But don’t hold on to the sadness! Feel it, be in it for a little while, and then release it! Honor the tears that may flow as your body’s way of releasing old emotions that you can now let go of.

Enjoy the beauty of this season and all that it brings with it!

heart of compassion

A few months back, I met with a friend at Orchard Valley Coffee downtown Campbell. The energy between her and I had been a bit funky in the weeks or months preceding, and we were in dire need of a good heart-to-heart. We both needed to express to each other some of the things that had gone unsaid, as well as clear some stagnant energy that had been building up between us.

I am a great believer in open communication. I believe that nothing heals relationships like opening our hearts and speaking our truths. Holding things inside and repressing emotions never does anyone any good. With time, resentment builds as we make assumptions about what the other person may be thinking and feel misunderstood by them, rather than being open with each other about what we are truly thinking and feeling.

My friend and I met on a Sunday morning – Farmer’s Market time in downtown Campbell! There was something very special about being surrounded by the vibrant and alive energy of all the people who were out and about on this weekend morning to buy fresh produce, enjoy the sunshine, and interact with fellow human beings.

My friend was already there when I arrived and had selected a table for us. When I sat down across from her - slightly anxious about our interaction, though, deep inside, feeling a great sense of peace and calm about it -, I looked up to see one of the most beautiful paintings I’d ever seen! It was a large painting of a heart, primarily in red, yellow and orange tones – all of my favorite colors! While my friend went to order her drink, I sat and gazed in amazement at this beautiful picture. I soaked up its energy and let it fill me with a great sense of joy and wonder. I felt my heart energy open. I was in awe that I would have found myself sitting right across from this painting that resonated so deeply with my heart and soul at this particular moment in time! It felt like a gift from the Universe. There was a tremendous amount of healing emanating from this painting for me – and for my friend and our relationship together. Throughout our entire conversation, I felt as if enveloped by a warm, soothing light. It was beautiful. I was in awe.

As it happened, my friend and I had a really good interaction that morning. I felt we both were able to open our hearts to each other and walk away from our meeting feeling a great deal better about our relationship than we had walking into it! I felt as if the Universe had positioned this painting strategically to bring both me and my friend healing energy on that day. How very beautiful!

I’d meant, since then, to return to this particular coffee shop to find out who the artist was. I’d LOVE to have this painting on my wall! Today, a number of months later, I met with another person at the same coffee shop. On my way there, right around the corner, I spotted some art work displayed outdoors and realized this artist had her studio right there! I decided I would stop by after my meeting.

At the coffee shop, I sat in the same spot today as that Sunday in June, facing the wall on which the coffee shop owners display local art, and where some of the same artist’s more recent pieces were currently on exhibit. As planned, I walked over to her studio/shop after my meeting. She sat behind the counter, and I was excited to meet the artist in person! Something compelled me to tell her the story of the impact her art had had on me that Sunday morning in early June. I told her how it had ‘opened my heart energy.’ She was so thrilled to hear my words and claimed I’d made her day! In fact, she’d just been looking for a tag line for her website, and ‘Open your heart energy’ seemed to be just perfect!

I felt as if I had been led into her store today. I got to be a gift to her, just like she, through her art, had been a gift to me a few months back. We had a very sweet interaction, and I walked away elated – filled with a deep sense of gratitude and awe for the beauty of life and all its synchronicities. She sent me off with two of her beautiful greeting cards to thank me for walking into her life and giving her just what she’d needed in that moment. I walked away with the promise to manifest into my life someone who’d want to gift me the painting of hers I love most, called 'Labyrinth of Love.' :) (Can't seem to link directly to it... it's the one on the right hand corner of the top row if you follow this link... though I'll glady accept the one to its left or the first one in that row, as well. :))

If you live in the area, go visit Debbie Marie Arambula at her gallery at 327 East Campbell Ave in Campbell, CA. If not, you can check out her gallery on her website. Her art is so beautiful! Trust me, its color, vibrancy and compassionate energy will open your heart and fill you with great joy!

a wink from the Universe ;)

The Universe comes up with all sorts of creative and fun little ways to send us messages. We only have to remain open and aware to notice them!

Today, as I was walking the last stretch of the way home after my morning run, I looked down on the pavement to see the following image:

I had to come back out with my camera to capture this and share the joy it brought me with others. What a beautiful reminder that life is good! ...a wink from the Universe. ;)

change and uncertainty

Think back at a time in your life when you sensed great impending change. You didn’t know yet what shape or form this change would take or how it would come about. Maybe you were facing a move, considering a career change, leaving a relationship, or starting a family. Whatever it was, there was a sense of unknown. You knew something was about to change big time, but you did not yet know what exactly this change would look like and just how it would affect your life and your experience of yourself in this world. You found yourself in a period of transition – no longer fully grounded in the reality you had known, and not yet quite able to make out the details of the fuzzy future that lay ahead.

How did you feel at that time? Did you feel scared? Unsettled? Uncertain? Maybe anxious?

Now fast-forward past this transition period to a time when the change had fully taken effect. Maybe you’d found a new job, or the perfect apartment to move into, or you’d taken the leap and left a relationship that, for whatever reason, was not quite right for you anymore at that time. Or you were holding your newborn baby in your arms and feeling the most profound and incredible love you could ever imagine. I’d venture a guess that, from that point in time looking back, all the anxiety leading up to the change seemed completely unnecessary and a waste of your energy. Everything had fallen into place perfectly, and, from your new vantage point, you were hard-pressed to understand how you could have been so worried about something that, in the end, had worked out so smoothly and perfectly.

Now come back to the present moment. What changes are you facing at this time? What scary unknown lies ahead of you? Are you feeling overwhelmed at the thought of all the details you will need to work out in order to get to where you are going? Uncertain about just what to do and what steps to take next? Worried whether the ‘right’ job/apartment/partner etc. is out there for you and how to find it/him/her?

Think back again at the past challenge you just revisited. Take a moment to appreciate how, in looking back, you can see that everything fell perfectly into place for you. That everything lined up exactly the way that it needed to for you to meet the precise individuals and come across just the right bits of information that lead you to where you needed to be at the time.

If you could go back and give your past self in that period of transition some advice, what would it be? You might tell your past self to relinquish all worries. To trust that all would work out in your highest good. And that, although the future may have, at the time, felt foreign, scary, and unknown, it would soon feel familiar, comfortable, and ‘right.’

Here is an invitation to trust that the future will unfold exactly as it needs to. That you are always being led to people and places that further your growth and have at heart your highest good. Knowing this, you can relax into the present moment, trusting that it will carry you smoothly and seamlessly into a bright and wonderful future.

visualization for health and happiness

I receive a number of inspirational quotes via email every day. I always look forward to my daily quotes. It’s like opening up a little surprise package every morning. What’s going to be in it today? Recently, an email included the following quote by Harry Emerson Fosdick, a Baptist minister who challenged fundamentalist Christian views in his preachings in New York City in the early 1900s:

Hold a picture of yourself long and steadily enough in your mind’s eye and you will be drawn toward it. Picture yourself vividly as winning, and that alone will contribute immeasurably to success. Great living starts with a picture, held in your imagination, of what you would like to do or be.

I am a HUGE believer in visualization! It is SO powerful! I always encourage my patients to visualize. Be it visualizing healing golden-white light infusing a problem area while they are laying on my treatment table resting with needles in, or visualizing a new job, life partner, perfect health, or whatever else it may be that their hearts desire.

I encourage you to take some time out EVERY DAY to visualize. It is SO instrumental in helping you achieve any desired outcome and manifest your dreams! Make it a formal commitment. Integrate visualizing into your daily routine like you do eating your meals and grooming yourself. It is just as important – if not more!

Drawing on the quote from above, I suggest that you choose a photograph of yourself that was taken in a moment when you were feeling extremely good. Find a picture in which you exude – no, downright OOZE! – happiness! A picture in which you GLOW. In which your EYES SPARKLE. It may be a picture of you with someone you love. With your grandchild or grandparent, or your favorite niece or nephew. Or a picture of you with your beloved pet. Or out in nature, on your favorite beach, or doing any activity that you love. When we are with people we love or doing things that we love, we feel good. And IT SHOWS!

It doesn’t have to be a recent picture. It just needs to be a picture that you can identify with, in which you see yourself as the person you really want to be. A picture, which, when you look at it, makes you think: Wow! What a beautiful and happy person this is! I WANT TO BE this person – ALL THE TIME!!

Now take this picture – blow it up if you like – and put it up in a place where you will see it every day – often! Stop and look at the picture as often as possible throughout the day. Look at the person in the picture and smile. Tell her how much you love her. How much you admire and respect him. Get into the feeling space you were in when this picture was taken. REALLY feel the way you felt in that moment! Then carry this feeling with you throughout the rest of your day. Let it INFUSE you. Soak it up. Let it become you. Marvel at the incredible potential you have within you and the beautiful person you are – within and without. You are a MIRACLE of life! You are BEAUTIFUL! Don’t ever let anyone have you believing otherwise – least of all yourself! Recognize the divinity within you and let it shine through your being. You are PERFECT!!

Now let this knowledge settle into your every cell. As you do, the energy of your each and every cell will begin to vibrate at a frequency that will translate into the most beautiful state of health and happiness you could possibly imagine.

Breathe it in… Make it real.
.
.
.
Be healthy.
.
.
.
Be happy. :)

WOAH!!!!

The ENTIRE Universe is conspiring to guide you to EXACTLY those people, places, events and circumstances that help you achieve optimal health and happiness, personal and spiritual growth, and live the life of your dreams. WOAH!!! How awesome is that?! How grateful are YOU right now?? :D

Goddess of Healing

I took out the colorful pastel chalks my sister gave me for my birthday to put onto paper, and, eventually my wall, the beautiful words of the Goddess of Healing I was given today. Sometimes, you've got to let the inner child out to get creative and play with colors. :) Your art need not be perfect. It just needs to be fun!

May you, too, remember to draw upon the Goddess of Healing today and every day!

Let this be an inspiration for you to do something playful today!

it's all in the attitude!

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.

inner smile

Next time you find yourself sitting anywhere waiting - at your doctor's office, your acupuncturist's, chiropractor's or massage therapist's office, at the car repair shop, the DMV, your daughter's soccer game... you name it! -, try this simple little healing exercise:

Close your eyes, and allow a soft smile to spread across your face by gently pulling up the corners of your eyes and mouth. Now let this smiling energy wash through your body. Breathe it in and feel its uplifting energy permeate every cell of your body. Feel yourself revitalized and renewed in just a matter of a few short minutes.

The first few times you do this, you might find you feel self-conscious about what people around you may think. If you feel too tempted to open your eyes, and you find the woman across the room giving you a curious look, try flashing a smile at her. I bet you she'll smile back! Now you've just generated healing energy for two!
